Every day, school shootings, street violence, gunshots, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed. While others continue to sit back and do nothing about it, criticize their own fellow citizens for this brutality. According to the Pew Research Center, the number of weapons in the United States is estimated at up to 310 million, representing around one firearm for each person in the country.
Gender inequality is the social cycle by which people are not treated as fair or equals. The treatment may arise from differentiations in science or social standards. Some of these distinctions are empirically-grounded while others appear to be socially constructed. The gender inequality also affects the non binary people or the gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine. Some of the studies manifest the different experiences of genders across many areas for example education, life expectancy, personality, careers and family life. This inequality is experienced differently over different cultures.
International and regional human rights conventions protect all persons regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights lays out this key principle of modern human rights, declaring, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” See The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (adopted 10 December 1948), UNGA Res. 217 A(III) (UDHR) art.1. Unfortunately, homophobic attitudes, failure to protect or investigate hate crimes and other abuses, and insufficient legal protection at the national level often prevent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons from fully enjoying their human rights.
Age is the number of years that a person lives or has existed. One of the most socially condoned and institutionalized forms of prejudice is ageism or also known as age discrimination. It is not popular just like racism and sexism, but ageism is one of the individual or group disadvantages by prejudice. Ageism which is also a form of age discrimination are most experienced by older and younger people, it is a discrimination based on age.
According to research Pew Survey, Most American adults (82%) says that muslims are subject to at least some discrimination in the U.S. today, in specific instances being treated with suspicion, singled out by airport security or called offensive names. In this year’s survey, roughly two-thirds of Americans (64%) also say Jews face at least some discrimination in the U.S. Most religions have experienced discrimination which is caused by the different perspective of belief of people. The law ensures not just individuals who have a place with customary, coordinated religions, for example, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism, yet other people who have genuinely held strict, moral or good convictions.
Based on research done by Dinesh Bhugra CBE, “Mental health” and “mental illness” are not polar opposites but may be thought of as points on a continuum. Mental health is a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to vary and to cope with adversity. Mental health is not easy to define as Cowen (1994) notes: “... built into any definition of wellness ... are overt and covert expressions of values. Because values differ across cultures as well as among subgroups (and indeed individuals) within a culture. The ideal of a uniformly acceptable definition of the constructs is illusory.”
People with mental and physical disabilities has experienced discrimination throughout history. Listed below are some of the things that people with disabilities has experienced:
“Nationality is the citizenship or the legal identification of the person.”
There are still people who experience the darkness of discrimination concerning their nationality or citizenship, who don’t get equal rights and were mistreated. Because of the injustices towards one’s nationality, he/she doesn’t have a chance to show his/her authentic ability and character. Thus, people resulted in being deprived of opportunities. Citizenship discrimination can be encountered within the workplace — in which the employment of the person is grounded with his/her nationality. The very cause of this is prejudice regarding the concept of identity of a particular nation. Discrimination towards the person may lead to affect the person’s well-being. Racial discrimination is experienced by many people around the world. According to a website, Racial Discrimination is defined as a person being treated less than other people in a situation because of their race, color, national or ethnic origin, or immigrant status. According to national partnership, Black women in the United States are more likely to experience pregnancy-related death three to four times greater than white women. Based on studies, people that experience or are exposed to racism can cause negative effects to their physical health such as stress that can increase the blood pressure and can also weaken their immune system. Aside from this it can also cause various mental health issues like depression, emotional distress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal thoughts. Even though it is hard, we need to eradicate the racial injustice in this world by any means, and each one of us has a responsibility to do it. You may be wondering how you will do it, so we will give you some ways on how to promote racial justice. Now it is your time to take action.
Millions of people around the world have limited to no access to education. They lose the opportunity to have formal education because of many factors, the main ones being poverty and the lack of access to education. Being able to go to school; however, does not guarantee a student quality education. The student may face discrimination in many aspects most commonly in their race, religion, financial status, and their mental or physical ability. Because of this social injustice, the bright and deserving students will be unable to reach their full potential or be able to make the most of their education unlike those students who do not experience the said discrimination. Social justice in education is not just about building schools that gives students access to formal and quality education, but it is also about building a healthy and safe environment that helps all students regardless of their background to grow and reach their full potential.
